A Brief History of Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras aka “Fat Tuesday” or “Carnival” dates back thousands of years. It wasn’t until Christianity came along and incorporated this festivity into the day prior to lent which it become a worldwide phenomenon. Lent is a time of fasting and prayer. During this time you were only allowed to eat fish, so the pagans used the Tuesday before Lent to get rid of all of their meat and spirits, thus being called “Fat Tuesday”. It wasn’t until the 1800’s that the famous parades and merriment in New Orleans that we have come to know today started.
The tradition of wearing masks has always been present when Mardi Gras started. However, when the Spanish took over Louisiana they abolished mask wearing because they felt that it was too suspicious. Once Louisiana became a state the rule was lifted and masks made a comeback.
