I believe the social media phenomenon is still in its infancy. Does anyone remember when personal computers fist started? I had worked on mainframe computers in many college classes and my senior year I took a class in programming a PC (actually an Apple). I thought "so what"? Then a mere three months later I took another "IT" class and was introduced to Lotus -- a long defunct financial modeling software. My eyes were opened. Wide open. Because THEN, someone had created a tool to utilyze the possbilities of PCs and I was hooked.

I think that is where we are with social media. It is still largely in a state of flux. Changing rapidly with each passing week. I don't fully understand how to "master" it, but I am beginning to see the possibilities. Our firm needs to get started now to take advantage of it. Without having a hand in the game we won't comprehend and anticipate what is coming next.

Ken,

Great post. Social media is definitely here to stay. My generation is all about transparency, which is what social media is all about. It gives us (as consumers) insight into businesses in order to make a fully educated buying decision. As a brand, it is important to put your best foot forward and face the negative situations head on. Ratify instead of turning a blind eye ( catchy phrase, I know).

I think the next evolution of social media is the crossover between TV and social. This evolution is in it's infancy stages with platforms such as Google TV, Hulu and Streaming Netflix at the forefront. Comcast is promoting interactive commercials; take a look, http://www.comcast.net/newguide/iTV%20Guide%20Request%20For%20Information.pdf. This will change the ad business drastically. This will gather information about consumers allowing companies to be able to target down to a deliberate detail. What could this mean for Nielsen? Just my theory! I think you just sparked my next blog entry.

Thanks Ken!

The USDD first used the idea of the Internet. Now we are finding it going through another growth spurt. Social Media is here to stay. And I believe it will expand even greater as time goes on. Perhaps social media will be divided into virtual countries. Perhaps video calling and communication will increase the need for a social media account. Facebook is just the base of something greater! Are you ready? I would like to create a site like facebook, but is linked to your location. A site that you can literally open the world, choose a country, and connect with someone walking down the street. They can see where you are, and you can see where they are. Anyone want to help create this with me?

Ken,

I liked that video, but I didn't think it was anything new to me. I enjoyed the PILMMA seminar and the ideas on how to generate traffic and likes on your facebook page. The most effective tool I've found to get comments and conversations is to put a client story in a post and how happy I am when someone finally prevails after a long struggle.

Ken- First, keep up the good work. You guys provide great tools and resources. With 5 different multi-million dollar cases "coming" to our firm via our website/blog and social media efforts and, with the phone ringing off the hook almost solely because of our social media efforts (we're not using any paid advertising anymore), social media rocks-- but I think you already know this.

With the internet and a growing global economy, there’s an unprecedented movement changing how we do business, practice law, and how clients find and interact with us. The fact of the matter is that winds of social and digital change have brought new technology, attitudes and transparency to how everyone should and will market their practice and interact with each other.

A select group of lawyers “get this” and welcome this innovative way to build their practices and help others. They understand that the time for change is long overdue and they’re already moving quickly to position themselves for the next generation of clients and practice development.

I'm passionate about using social media and offline relationship building tools and approaches to strengthen current contacts and establish new relationships. And you know what, it's been a ton of fun too! Although I'm practicing full time (4 trials in the next 45 days), I enjoy blogging and adding ideas to my "other" site called the New World Lawyer at http://NewWorldLawyer.com Stop by and say hi! Mitch

Apparently it's here to stay. The difficulty for lawyers will be how to track business for purposes of getting a handle on ROI. It may be more of a branding media than actually being able to track clients directly. We are doing it to a degree and time will tell.

Ken- Great tip. A slight variation is to include a single page "in house" flyer or note with links back to your blog or web site. Maybe to a new article, new web site section, or special firm offer posted online. At the end we also include invites to join our email list and RSS feeds for exclusive "online only specials and discounts" and also invite them to join us on Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin (with icons and actual links then can go to). Keep up the good work! Mitch

A close family friend runs a successful business in my town. Old school and only by referrals. Been in business for 15 years. He had a staff member that does birthday cards every morning. Signs them as from the team. It's genious, keeps the clients from five or ten years ago thinking about his business!

Everyone thinks about what they can do to bring innew clients. That's naturally. But are you leveraging your current and past client base? It's not that the past client doesn't want torefer his friends to you. It's that, over time, he or she forgets.

Ken, You are comleatly correct. Sending cards to past clients is just the tip of the iceberg. Keeping in touch with past, present clients is the most productive way to recieve refferal cases.
It begin's with a good marketing plan. Data Base Marketing.
Thanks,
Harlan
